Kitchen progress

March 17, 2011 6 Comments

These pesky little things called work and grad school suck up too much time so we haven’t been able to spend a few solid days on the kitchen. This has dragged on the kitchen remodel a bit longer that anticipated.  We are doing all the kitchen ourselves with the exception of installing the countertops and some electrical and plumbing work. I should rephrase that, I have been doing most of the kitchen myself and the hubby has helped with just the heavy lifting to install the top cabinets and the top doors because I’m too short and don’t have enough upper body strength to do it.
Really, Ikea kitchens are that easy to do once you get the hang of it. Each of the cabinets probably only takes 15 minutes to build once you figure out those hysterical directions. If you are not changing the layout of your kitchen it really is a project you can tackle on your own if you are handy and have the right tools. Don’t worry your kitchen will not look like this:

We still have to install our dishwasher and change out a cabinet which was damaged in the box so we can finish out the bottom cabinets. The rush is on to finish before Sunday since we have the countertop company coming Monday morning to make the template for our countertops. I see the light at the end of the tunnel!
I’m still thrilled at our progress since we now have a kitchen that looks halfway normal. The ceiling lights have not been installed (we leave that to the professionals) so excuse the darkness and random light bulbs coming out of the wall.
Just in case you missed it, here is what we’ve been working with since December.
Closing day and after our demo day.
Clean up of demo.
Painted with a working stove and fridge.
Pretty big change, right? I’ll have some tips when we finish up as building a kitchen is really an interesting process. What do you think? Now I’m off to finish the base cabinet doors…

It looks awesome. Wow, what a difference. I did the same thing with our Ikea cabinets. I would build them and J would just tighten the screws up to make sure they were sturdy. I need to go by and see the progress.
