thrift store failure – wishing for a dresser

January 13, 2012 12 Comments

I have been on the hunt for a midcentury dresser or media cabinet for months. I hunt Craigslist daily but I swear that ours is pathetic. Everything is over priced and junky. I’ve done a few rounds at thrift stores but sadly came up empty. I’m going to need to step it up a bit and look more. Our family room really needs a media cabinet to help anchor the space. It would also house our TV and the miscellaneous electronics that come with. I’m looking forward to drawers or doors to help control the clutter.

This is what the room looked like just after we moved in. Don’t mind the gaping hole into our master bedroom on the right, dingy painted brick and horrendous arrangement of our old media center we built over 8 years ago. It was arranged much nicer in our old place but we did not set it up correctly this time around.

A fresh coat of white paint makes a huge difference in the space but that TV look so sad and really not centered on that wall. That TV needs a stand…something cool and slightly funky.
I have visions of a piece that I can transform into something like this:
Via Centsational Girl
Via BirdHouse
Via Elizabeth & Co
Please send me some thrift store lucky vibes for the next few weeks. I really need to retire that old media center and get something great in that space instead. I’m hoping I’ll get some time in this weekend to run around and look for a score.

So how’s the thrift store or Craigslist selection in your area? If you have found any amazing piece, please share!

Good luck with your hunt! I what if you went a little more ornate with a 70 chunky dresser that you can paint out? It might add some extra texture? Just a suggestion if you give up on the mid century piece. I am always on the hunt but they are either too expensive or falling apart!

Those are too cool…they remind me of the credenza that is in my husbands office. Have you tried a used office furniture store? That may be a good option!

i wish you could just drive up here and stay for a few days- you would be sure to find one. i just got a double dresser (mcm) at salvation army for $45, and that style seems to be easier to find up here. can you just teleport yourself?

It always seem like I will see a type of piece right and left until I want to buy one and then there are none to be found.
Have you searched CL for a mid-century sterio cabinet? Good luck with your search.

You must live in Atlanta too, then? Our Craigslist is ALWAYS lacking in amazing finds. Good luck!

My mom and I scoured the local flea market almost every Sunday this past Spring, Summer, and Fall for the perfect dresser for her front entryway. Finally, on the last weekend, we found it. I don’t think we could have found a more perfect fit! Here’s her post on the transformation: http://janedavila.blogspot.com/2012/01/dresser-revealed.html

Just keep at it and don’t give up! Yours is out there waiting for you! 😉

I can relate completely! I am on the hunt for a media cabinet / dresser / whatever for our TV as well, and have had zero luck with Craigslist and thrift stores. Have you considered going the Ikea route and adding an overlay? I pinned this site and am dying to try it out: http://pinterest.com/pin/260434790921189196/

It’s certainly not as cheap as a fabulous Craiglist find, but I’m getting tired of searching, so I may end going that route….we’ll see. 🙂

Doesn’t it always seem like you find lots of cool things when you don’t have a use or plan for said cool things, but then when you’re really looking for something, you can’t find it? Good luck with your hunt!!

Good luck! Sometimes it’s hard to find something you’re actually looking for. I’m sure you’ll find the perfect piece when you’re not expecting to!
