shine on you crazy diamond – vinyl stencil art

February 7, 2012 13 Comments

This year, while I decided to forgo actual New Year resolutions, I did give myself some Pinterest resolutions I wanted to follow through on. I tackled my first one in January by making freezer paper stencils for a baby gift. Since those were successful, I am officially hooked on playing with my Silhouette. Next up was using the Silhouette to cut vinyl.
For my first few attempts with vinyl, I wanted to try it out on canvas to make stencil artwork. This is my Pink Floyd inspired piece. Shine On You Crazy Diamond is one of my all-time favorite songs.
I used the design program that came with the Silhouette to lay out the words in the size and font I wanted for my canvas. I used a small 6 inch x 8 inch canvas which I spray painted white to begin with. It is impossible to get a good photo of the words cut on the vinyl right out of the machine, so this is one after I weeded away the extra vinyl.

I used transfer tape to remove the vinyl letters from the backing and adhere them to the canvas. This part is still pretty tricky to me. In order to pull the vinyl off the backing cleanly with the transfer tape you need to put a decent amount of pressure on them but then it makes it harder to get the letter to stick to the canvas from the tape.

I forgot to take a picture of the next step, but if you want your letters to be extra crisp, give the entire canvas a coat of the paint color you want them to be. I used white spray paint to give it a good even coat to seal in the letters and avoid any bleeding. After that dried, I gave the canvas an even spray of a charcoal satin paint.

Once the paint dried – yes, be patient and wait for the paint to dry – I peeled away the letters using tweezers to reveal my clean white letters.

I liked the font and the layout so much, I made two. Not sure what I will do with them just yet…

“Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun…Shine on you crazy diamond…”

I’m officially hooked on vinyl. I’m glad I stocked up with some from Oh My Crafts because my head is spinning with ideas.

What are your favorite songs? Please share 🙂

I just did something similar but I projected my letters on and hand painted them all – so time consuming. Also, I did it on a huge canvas. I like how clean yours came out – very nice!

What a great idea to use vinyl as a stencil. That cutter seems like a great tool to have.

I don’t have a vinyl cutter so I will talk music…ahh Pink Floyd! I still remember going to some Pink Floyd laser light show when I was in high school. Just once. Music just depends on what mood I am in, but if we are talking classic rock, I need to stay loyal to my Jimi Hendrix craze and say “Have you ever been Experienced” by Jimi. Good times!

I love Pink Floyd too. You can also do this with contact paper, it’s less expensive then vinyl.
