leveling the playing field

January 26, 2011 2 Comments

We figured out that the back area of our house was an addition in the late 60s. In the original floor plan, the transition space between the dining room and the family room, or the bar as we call it, must have been the laundry room. The family room was actually a covered patio and our master bedroom was originally the garage. The studio, master closet and bathroom were added during the time when they closed in the patio to make it our family room. This addition left us with a few random steps in the house that we wanted to level out.
The bar area originally included a step down from the dining room and kitchen and then an additional step down into the family room. That made it for a couple of nasty falls the first few days in the house as we would hit the small step…if you could even call it a step. There is a difference in the floor of a few inches where the pink tiles meet the wood and where it meets the laminate on the right.
We wanted to continue the wood floors from the dining room through the kitchen and bar and have an even surface to work with. After some days that looked liked this.
Child labor was only employed for the few seconds it took to take this photo 😉
We ended up with this instead. Okay, so it still looks like a mess. Just close your eyes and picture hardwoods all over that plywood and a completely even seam between those rooms. Much better, right?
The Cuban tile is under the wood frame to help act as a moisture barrier and the sub-floor is now ready for the hardwood installation to start next week. The floors have arrived to the warehouse and will be delivered to the house before the end of the week. They’ll acclimate over the weekend and the installers will start on Monday or Tuesday and be done in time for us to move next weekend. Finally!

Lol, your first paragraph was kind of like a riddle. I had to read it a couple times but now I understand. I can totally see the hardwoods there when I close my eyes, probably because I’ve been there. Oh, and the child labor comment, CUTE!

Oh, and thank you for your kind comments on my site…and I’m following you back!
