all you need is love

I’m a huge Beatles fan and fell instantly in love with this image when I saw it on Pinterest a few weeks ago. What a simple way to honor one of my favorite bands and a great song. After a bit of research and a little shopping trip for some supplies I devised a way to make my own version.
Unfortunately the image was not linked to the original source.

My supply list included a small canvas, computer print out, acrylic gel medium and a variety of acrylic paint colors.

I painted the canvas a solid color to start – mixing a few colors to get the shade I wanted as a base. I painted two because I was sure I was going to screw up the first one. They were small 8 x 10 canvases I bought on sale at Michael’s.
I picked a font I liked and typed it out in Photoshop in a layout that would work for my canvas. Trick is you need to flip the image so that when you transfer the image to the the canvas the words display correctly. If you don’t have access to Photoshop free programs like Gimp and Picnik work well too.
I covered the canvas with a coat of the acrylic gel medium. I used a nice liberal coating while trying to make it as even as possible. Once I had the right coverage on the canvas, I flipped the paper image face down and firmly rubbed the paper onto the canvas. I was impatient and pulled it off after about 5 minutes. I could have waited longer and pressed down more to get a more even coverage but it worked well enough for what I intended to do.

My idea was not to have a perfect “print like” version. I wanted something handmade that you could see textures and variations to. I used a variety of brushes, some paint alone and paint mixed with gel medium to play with the textures on the canvas.

After waiting for it to dry some, I worked on it a bit more until I was happy with the end result.
You'll can you kinda see in the photo that the brush strokes and variations are visible which is what I was going for.

All in all I'm happy with my first attempt at transferring images using gel medium.
Now that I've tried this method my head is swimming with more ideas how I can use this method.
Give it a try, it is fun!

Since this is inspired artwork I'm linking up to:

I love this idea. I’ve been thinking of doing a line of my wedding song on a rustic piece of wood. You are helping my inspiration.
