kitchen towel aprons – simple sewing tutorial

March 2, 2012 27 Comments

I’m so glad everyone enjoyed the gift exchange posts this week. This is one of the gifts I gave Cheryl. I found this awesome tutorial on making kitchen towel aprons at CraftWhatever. Seriously adorable and super easy. I pinned it and kept my eyes open for cute kitchen towels every time I was at Target. The thing is, I’m not great with the sewing machine. I’m not horrible but I’m definitely not an expert so I wanted to simplify the tutorial even more. Less steps = less chances I can mess it up. It doesn’t get much easier than this.

Find yourself some cute kitchen towels. I bought these lemon and cherry ones with specific people in mind. What is the best part of doing this with kitchen towels instead of fabric, you ask? See the edges? They are already hemmed. It is all about the less chances to mess up.

I folded the towels in half along the long side and cut them along the short edge in the middle. Of course, when crafting with pets, I always have a companion while working on sewing projects. I’m amazed they all still have their toes. I don’t know what it is with cats and cutting tools.

I had some yellow ribbon which I knew would be perfect for the lemon towel and used some pink ribbon to match the cherry ones. I just wrapped the ribbon around my hips and had the hubby make a simple bow so I could measure out how long it needed to be. My Cuban hips are good for something…

Make sure to find the middle of the ribbon and the middle of the towel to line them up. I used a ton of pins because I’m always scared of things moving while on the sewing machine. Those talented with the sewing machine are probably laughing at me right now but I don’t care. I still suck at sewing and I’m okay with that πŸ˜‰

I did a simple stitch along the bottom of the ribbon. I didn’t do a great job on the cherry one. My little sister is getting it so I think I will be forgiven for a not-so-straight stitch line.

And here is the finished lemon kitchen towel apron. I think it is pretty darn cute and pretty useful. As you can imagine, I’m just as messy in the craft room as I am in the kitchen so I need to get to work and make myself one now. I forgot to take a picture of the cherry one but it is the same idea.

So what do you think? Easy enough to tackle, right? My favorite thing about this (which is true for most of my crafts really) is that you can personalize it to your kitchen decor or style. Just find a ribbon and towels you like and you are good to go.

Great idea! I love those and they are so cute! I might need to make myself one…..I can sew just not well. Maybe if I buy a pattern with stripes or plaid I can then follow the line.

Well, I can tell you are better than I with the sewing machine. I do have a very clever and crafty friend who can sew anything. Going to pass this one onto her, she’ll love it.

LOVE!!! Your choice of towels reminds me of spring (and I can’t wait for the tulips to come up!). How cute AND easy! My dog loves to lay on my cutting mat too. And fabric. GAH. Pets – gotta love ’em! I think next time I go antiquing I’m going to look for some flour sacks to make an apron or two. CUTE!
