getting closer to a real kitchen

March 25, 2011 4 Comments

Countertop time! We’ve had plenty of time to think about what type of countertops we wanted given that we bought our cabinets January 1st. Slow and steady wins the race, right?
After some research we went for quartz, specifically CaesarStone. Our personal preference lead us to this design-wise since there was less variation in the pieces in terms of color and the textural appearance. While granite and marble are beautiful and many people love the variety in them, it wasn’t for us. The plus side for us also was the ratings from Consumer Reports on the durability of quartz. If it was cheaper it would have been perfect but as I’ve come to realize renovating this house, I have expensive taste…most of the time, really expensive taste.
We saved a ton of money installing the kitchen ourselves and scored a great deal on our appliances through my company’s discount with Whirlpool so our kitchen upgrade was the countertop. They came and measured on Monday and just heard back on the installation date. Two weeks from today the “Concrete” color counter tops arrive! I think the color will give the room a nice contrast to the cabinet and it goes well with our color scheme throughout the house.

I get to ditch the random hollow door we have been using and stop dicing and prepping on my dinner table. And don’t forget the sink! Once the countertop is in, our sink will be installed. Oh happy day!

After these get installed we still have to decide on our backsplash. As ugly and bumpy as our walls in the kitchen are, we are not going to rush the decision.  We’ll be living with our cabinets and counters for a while until we decide which way to go. There are so many options to go with and I want to make sure we pick one we’ll love for years to come. We’ve come along way, haven’t we?

Looking good. I’m loving the idea of the white cabinets with the concrete color countertops.

They have a lot of options, too, not just the cabinets they have in stock at the store. I recommend having a professional measure your kitchen for you, especially for countertops, because new kitchen countertops won’t fit correctly unless you have PERFECTLY straight walls.
