lazy mutt bed – tin bucket dog bed tutorial

October 5, 2011 4 Comments

I ended up buying a large white beverage tin with the intention of making something for the creatures. I really, really, really wanted to make this kitty play area for Annie based on this post from Gardners 2 Bergers but then we adopted Lemur. Crazy kitten + grass + dirt would not equal a good combination in our house.
Condo Cat Backyard – From Gardners 2 Berger
So sad because it really is a cute idea for indoor kitties. The tin has just been taking up space in my family room all summer only being used once to hold beers for a birthday party. And maybe to torture a mutt or two…
Then I came across this post from What the Graham?! and the wheels started spinning. I had a perfect piece of fabric for my craft room that needed to be used, a white tin that would look great in that space and the need for somewhere for the mutts to sleep since the cats have all their special spots in the room.
I would have better photos of this project but this was one I decided to tackle while the hubby was teaching his night class so it was late and I had no one to follow me with a camera. I called him right before he started to ask him where the jigsaw was, he said that he had a premonition that I was going to call him about power tools and was hoping I wouldn’t cut my fingers off. He also begged me to make sure I didn’t let the dogs outside while I was using it. He apparently thinks I’m trying to cause a Halloween massacre.
I used the jigsaw without any issue – no mutts or fingers were injured. So I didn’t keep it as neat as I wanted but it is a dog bed and they don’t really care, right? I used a thin piece of MDF I had to make a base for my dog bed pillow and cut a 2 inch thick foam piece to the same size with scissors.
I had some left over batting that I used to wrap both pieces together in an attempt to cover up my less than stellar cutting job. I used a staple gun to make sure the batting was on very tight.
I washed and ironed my fabric before hand then just centered it and started stapling it to the bottom of the MDF piece. I am definitely not winning any upholstery awards for this.
After I finished stapling it down I flipped it over on the tin. I actually ran out of staples mid-way through this so I need to finish to clean up some of the edges. Once I do that I’ll also attach the bed to the tin so it doesn’t slip off.
Lily seems to like it. She took a quick nap on it but always wakes up the second I have the camera out.
And of course, just like with anything in this house, the kitten has won the battle and claimed the bed as hers.
Thanks to What the Graham?! for the inspiration.

What a cute idea! I saw that kittie grass container post as well and know that it just couldn’t work with my CRAZY. I love your pooch spin on it! Great idea.
