the making of a craft room – hollow door desk

October 18, 2011 3 Comments

After I revealed my craft room a few weeks ago, I had a lot of questions on the furniture and organization. I’m going to share a few of the things I did to help anyone looking to make their own space. We did the room on the cheap. IKEA and Home Depot were my friends during the process. Customizing a room or space for your office or craft room does not need to be expensive.
When I first started the room my desk was much shorter and there was a lot of unused space in the room. I love a lot of room to spread out since I’m a messy crafter so I decided to move some items around to extend my desk.
I bought an extra Alex drawer system and an Expedit sytem from IKEA to serve as the base and corner of my desk.  I shifted the existing desk top over to create a space to make more room.
My existing desk top is a hollow door that has been stained and has a coat of polyurethane on it. We’ve had hollow door desk tops for years and I love them. They are light weight but durable and very easy to customize. Just find a base that works for you and throw on the top stained or painted to the color to match your decor.
For this space, we cut down a door to size and I stained it to match with the help of Lily. She wanted to make sure I didn’t miss any spots.
You can see the desk extension here slightly. There is obviously a small line in between both pieces but it doesn’t interfere with my crafting. I attached it to wall using two small L brackets. It gives me an extra two feet or so of space which is wonderful.
It creates the perfect space between the wall and my new Expedit unit for the cats to nap under too.
Hollow doors are usually $20 to $25 and come in different widths so you can find one that works for your room. If you are looking to make a custom desk without spending a ton of cash there are a great solution. Hope this helps anyone looking to make a special craft room or office of their own.
PS – Expect some changes around these parts in the next few days 🙂
