old to new – midcentury cabinet

November 7, 2011 10 Comments

I’m loving my “new” piece of furniture!

During my sanity break a couple of weeks ago, I picked up this little mid-century modern wine cabinet at a thrift store. The formica was beat up everywhere and it needed help but it was only $18 so I brought it home.

I got the look from the hubby who thought I was insane when he unloaded it from the car. He said it was “interesting” and it was going to be a good piece for me to “practice” on. He walked away and I may or may not have stuck my tongue out at him.

Apparently, we had a camera malfunction (or the husband deleted my photos) and I am missing all the images from during the refinishing so you will have to use your imagination.

I cleaned and primed the entire piece. I also removed the metal thingy that was inside the cabinet. I used Benjamin Moore Platinum in a satin finish on the inside and outside except the doors. The doors ended up with just a regular white satin from BM that I had on hand from when I painted our office file cabinets.

I put the piece in our front living room so when the hubby got home from work he would notice. He liked it too.

I added one of his jars (see how nice I am to him even when he doesn’t believe me and deletes my photos?!), a simple plate we have for some of our extra keys and my little succulent garden. Did you notice the plants are still alive? Even though they don’t bark or meow they have been watered and are looking good 😉

Not too shabby for $18 and a quart of paint! I had the primer and white satin paint in our stash already so this was definitely a good deal in my book.

What an amazing job you did. I love mid century pieces and although the puritans can’t handle the idea of it being painted I adore it.
