garden time – diy orchid garden

August 17, 2011 7 Comments

I love orchids. They are among my favorite flowers and they do so well in Florida so we’ve collected quite a few. We had our orchids beautifully displayed in our old home but unfortunately, ever since we moved they’ve been sitting in the shade on a fold out table. Lovely set up, right?

I should correct myself…they are my husband’s orchids. I kill them. I kill all plants. Plants don’t bark or meow to remind me to feed them. My furry kids are well taken care of, spoiled actually, but plants I’m put in charge of are horribly neglected.

The hubby on the other hand, has a very green thumb and when in full bloom our orchids look beautiful. Now that our avocado tree is providing the adequate amount of shade we are upgrading the orchids from their cheapy fold out table to new digs on the fence. We had the same set up in our old house but along the exterior wall near the deck. We loved the way it looked so we are replicating it here along our fence.

We drilled randomly placed holes for hooks into the wood fence in the appropriate sunny/shady areas to help start the base of our new garden.

We attached a few screws in the back of each wooden planter to allow them to stand up better against the fence. We used this same set up in the old house against the wall so we kept them in for this new garden. It lets the roots grow well so it is better for the plants too.

The orchid planters come with little metal hoops on the corners. We used that to attach wire to hold up the planters on the hooks. The hubby used stainless steel fishing leader because that is what we had on hand. Any wire or even sturdy twine would work.

After arranging all of our orchids along the fence, our orchid garden is back in business. Can’t wait for all of them to be in bloom.

Now I have an excuse to pick up a few more to fill in the gaps with some smaller blooming ones. You can’t crowd the big ones too much which is why our spacing is a bit funky but I sure can get some small ones to add to the mix. I think I need to go flower shopping this week!

What’s your favorite flower that you can grow where you live?

What a neat idea! They look fantastic on the fence. My favorite flowers in our area (VA) are hydrangeas. 🙂 I’m not much of a green thumb either. Visiting from the Haven FB page. Hope you’ll stop by my blog to say hi. 🙂

I like what you did with those plants. If you ask me, I like plants which are easy to grow and require less maintenance.
