subway tile backsplash – installation is not so bad!

December 22, 2011 18 Comments

I’m so excited about this project. I laid tile and so far so good!

We started our kitchen renovation last December when we gutted the kitchen and started slowly rebuilding it. Since April we have had an almost complete kitchen. It has been fully functional but really needed the finishing touches. I was getting quite tired of looking at the random patched up walls.

The hubby was so hesitant to let me tackle this but I’m so glad we decided to do it ourselves. These are the first three tiles I have ever set in my life. Looks easy? It is! You just need the right tools, patience and research.

I will fully admit that I am the messiest DIYer and crafter around. For as OCD I am in my house in general, it is amazing how dirty I get doing something like this. I had tile adhesive in my hair. I’m not joking. I have no idea how that happens but it does. If I clean it up after and it gets the job done it is okay in my book. The husband might not agree but I after looking at the backsplash, I won’t listen to any complaining about my messiness.

I’m happy with how easy this was despite the wonky walls in our kitchen. All you need is patience. Once the tile sets tonight, I’ll be grouting all of this and caulking the edge along the counter for the complete finished look. Right now the lines between the tiles look dark because there is no grout yet. That is on the to do list for tonight but I couldn’t wait to show you guys.

I keep looking at it and smiling. Almost done! I can’t believe it is the same space.
For all you new readers, our kitchen has gone through a major transformation in the past year. This is what we started with…
Back to work! We have plenty on the list to do before our Christmas brunch on Sunday.
