ribbon, ribbon and more ribbon – diy ribbon organization

July 28, 2011 22 Comments

I have a craft supply shopping problem. At least I can admit it. It doesn’t help that the hubby encourages it. Yes ladies, he is a keeper for sure.

I LOVE ribbon. I buy ribbon even if I don’t have a planned project for it. I buy it just because it’s pretty…is that bad? The only problem with pretty ribbon is storage. My desk drawer system wasn’t working at all so I was inspired on Pinterest to use a hanger to store my ribbon. Pulled out a hanger out of my closet and was thrilled with the solution. This the photo that inspired my ribbon organization. Lovely, right?

Via
Great idea, easy to store and get to. Of course I came home one day to look into my closet and I found this…

I have a kitten. My craft closet is set up so I can only use a low hanging rack for hangers. This brilliant solution was not going to work in this house. The kitten, Lemur, thought it was the best toy ever.  For the record, this does make a great cat toy but not with the pretty ribbon I collect for crafty projects I never get to 😉
I found these little round wooden plaques at Joann’s. Less than a dollar a piece and sitting right next to the wooden dowels. I found a solution.

Bought a few and asked the hubby to drill some holes in the size of the dowels. I didn’t trust I could make the holes straight myself. He used the drill press at work but a regular drill with the right bit size would work just fine. I cut down the dowels to the height I wanted so the ribbons would be easy to get to.  I attached the dowels to the bases with a little Gorilla Glue. Do not use too much, it spreads and expands so you need much less than you think. Trust me.

I gave it all a quick spray of color just for some fun. I’ve wanted a pop of yellow in my craft room and thought this would be a great spot for it.

I told you I had a problem. This isn’t even the full stash.

As the paint dried overnight, I organized my ribbon and used pins to hold down the ones that had already been opened so they wouldn’t unravel. Now it is easy to just unpin it and cut off the length I need.

Pretty, organized and best of all they are far from little kitties. That is until she realizes she can hop onto those shelves from the table…

We are on Facebook now so check us out there Directions Not Included when you can. I’m also linking up to my favorite parties all listed here: Link Events

PS – Yes that is a dog behind sitting on my shelf. I purchased it at IKEA. It makes me laugh 😉

This is a great idea! All of my ribbon is in a drawer and I hate what it looks like every time I open it. Glad I found this.

Great idea! I’ve been struggling with the same problem- just yesterday I went through all my ribbon and found stuff I’d completely forgotten about! Now you can see it all- I’ll have to try this.

I’m always struggling with ribbon storage too. I like the way the ribbon holders you made look, but I don’t have the space for it right now. I always want to take it of the rolls and roll it tighter. One day I’ll find a solution. Yours looks great!

Found this on The Girl Creative. I was looking for a way to keep my ribbon organized- now that it can’t be contained in a shoe box anymore. This just might be the answer I need! Thanks. I am a new follower, too.

Love it! I just made a thread organizer just like this!! But with a thinner dowel. Mine is currently white, but I’m really liking your yellow color. I should have it up on my blog in a few days. I’ll link back to you to show readers the ribbon version if that’s okay.

Hi! I found your post at “Home Savvy A-Z” and I love it!!! I just tried to cram a few more rolls of ribbon in the “ribbon drawer” with no luck and was wondering what I was going to do now? I think I will try this solution TODAY. Thank you so much for posting it.

That’s a great idea, I think I will need to make a few of those for the ribbons I am currently using. I always end up with falling stacks on my cutting table!

Thanks for commenting on my blog, I love your idea.
